Memphis Drops Two on First Day of Littlewood Classic

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Memphis softball team dropped its first games of the Littlewood Classic against Cal State Fullerton and Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Tigers (0-6) struggled early before battling with GCU (5-1) in the second game of the day. Memphis held strong defensively through most of the game, producing a pair of run-saving double plays.
Freshman Khamiyah Brown recorded her first home run of the season for the Tigers' lone run against Fullerton.
Cal State Fullerton 13, Memphis 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Fullerton got on the board first when Sarah Perez singled to second base, allowing Megan Delgadillo in for the run. The Titans followed up with a homerun to left field and then added four more runs to close out the first inning with a 6-0 advantage over the Tigers.
• Zoe Adebayo recorded Memphis' first hit of the game, singling up the middle in the top of the second. The Tigers put another on base before coming empty handed in the frame.
• Hannah Becerra recorded a two-run triple down the right field line in the second inning before the Titans tacked on another in the third to make it a 9-0 lead.
• Memphis recorded its first home run of the year when Brown sent a rocket over the left field fence in the top of the fourth inning.
• The Titans added to their lead in the fourth frame with an RBI-double and a three-run homer from Ava Arce.
• Ally Callahan recorded the Tigers' final base knock of the game in the top of the fifth before being tagged out at second base.
NOTABLES
• Rylee Dugar got the start going 3.0 innings with one strikeout.
• Abigail Morgan came in on relief for Dugar in the bottom of the fourth and tossed the final frame.
• Memphis finished the day with three hits: Adebayo, Khamiyah Brown and Callahan.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Memphis got its first base hit in the top of the first inning as Madison Berner sent a quick ground ball up the middle.
• GCU found itself on the board with a two-run single to right field from Ramsey Lopez to the right field in the bottom of the first inning. The Lopes added another tally in the inning when Lopez scored on a wild pitch.
• The Tigers managed to get two runners in scoring position in the top of the second inning, however, were unable to convert any runs.
• The Lopes continued to add to their lead as Savannah Groshong-Kirk hit a sacrifice fly to left field allowing Brynn-Jordan Smythe to plate in the bottom of the second.
• Memphis turned a double play to close out the third inning as Presley Morris caught a line drive at third and then fired a ball to first to get Lopez.
• Aubrey Williams tallied another hit for the Tigers in the top of the fifth. Ariel Davis moved Williams into scoring position with a single before both Tigers were left stranded.
• Sisters Taniyah Brown and Khamiyah Brown teamed up in the bottom of the fifth to get a double play going as they threw out Kristin Fifield at home followed by an out at first to complete the play.
• GCU recorded its fifth run of the game off a single up the middle from Ashely Trieweiler sending Lovey Kepa'a in for the score. The Lopes added two more runs before closing of the inning.

• Taniyah Brown got the start going 7.0 innings with four strikeouts and one double play to her stat line.
• The Tigers recorded five hits in the game from Davis, Semien, Brown, Berner and Williams.
• Memphis turned a pair of double plays to close out the third and fifth frames.
