Memphis Falls in Back-to-Back Games at ASU

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Memphis softball team dropped its two games Saturday at Farrington Stadium against Brigham Young University and Arizona State in Tempe, Arizona.
The Tigers (0-8) put up a strong fight early before falling to BYU (8-2) in the first game of the day. Memphis battled back with runs in the second and third frames before taking the lead in the fifth on a two-run homer. The Cougars responded with big innings in the final two innings to get the comeback win.
Redshirt-junior Madison Berner put together a strong performance on the day, going 4-of-6 at the plate with three RBI, two doubles and a home run.
BYU 12, Memphis 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
• BYU struck first when Huntyr Ava tripled to center field bringing in two runs in the top of the first inning.
• Madison Berner recorded a single through the right side in her first at-bat for the Tigers in the bottom of the first inning.
• Zoe Adebayo swung big for Memphis, blasting her first home run of the season in the second frame, sending the ball over the wall in left.
• The Tigers evened the score in the bottom of the third when Taniyah Brown hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Arianna Cox-Cole to reach home.
• The Cougars added a run in the fourth when Maddie Bejarano drew a bases-loaded walk.
• Memphis turned a double play to close out the fifth as Brown took a ground ball from the circle and fired it to Aubrey Williams at second, who then tossed it over to Adebayo at first.
• The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the frame when Berner sent a rocket over the left field wall, recording her first two-run home run of the season.
• BYU started the top of the sixth, tying the game on another bases-loaded walk. The Cougars added four more runs in the inning and then tacked on four more in the seventh.
• The Tigers hit their third homer of the game in the bottom of the seventh as Cox-Cole sent the ball over the left field fence.
NOTABLES
• Taniyah Brown got the start in the circle going 5.2 innings with four strikeouts.
• Rylee Dugar came in on relief for Brown in the top of the sixth and tossed the final 1.1 frames.
• Memphis recorded three home runs in the game: Adebayo, Berner and Cox-Cole.
• The Tigers tallied five hits against the Cougars: Berner (2), Cox-Cole, Adebayo and Williams.
Arizona State 13, Memphis 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Memphis struck first as Berner roped an RBI double to the center field wall in the top of the first inning, followed by an RBI single from Adebayo down the right field line.
• Francesca Lumpp helped the Tigers to one more run grounding out at first, allowing Presley Morris to cross the dish.
• ASU put up its first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning off a deep shot to right field from Alesia Denby. The Sun Devils added another on a passed ball and then pushed across eight more runs to take a 10-3 lead into the second.
• Cox-Cole got the next stanza going with a stand-up double, but that would be all the Tigers could manage.
• The Sun Devils added another tally in the second on a ground out to first.
• Memphis cut into the deficit with a run in each of the next two innings. Adebayo ripped an RBI single, scoring Khamiyah Brown for the fourth run.
• Berner then recorded her second run of the night on an ASU fielding error at second base.
• ASU got its final two runs in the bottom of the fourth to round out the scoring.
NOTABLES
• Dugar got the start going one-third of an inning before Abigail Morgan came on in relief. Morgan completed the game with four strikeouts.
