Memphis Drops Final Games of LSU Invitational

BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Memphis softball team dropped its final two games at the LSU Invitational against Pittsburgh and No. 14/15 LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers (0-4) battled against Pitt in their first game of the day, rallying within two runs before falling 6-4. Memphis put up its first runs of the season off a triple to right center from Aaliyah Dixon, sending in Arianna Cox-Cole, who recorded a base hit earlier in the inning. The Tigers kept it close with smart play at the plate with Khamiyah Brown, Cox-Cole and Dixon all going 2-4 at the plate while compiling three of the RBI.
The Tigers produced excellent moments on the defensive side of the ball, including Ariel Davis' unassisted tag from a ground ball at second, against LSU, recording the second out in the bottom of the third inning. Memphis committed only one error among the two games, cleaning up the miscues from last night.
Pitt 6, Memphis 4
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Memphis got the gears moving early as Cox-Cole singled down the left-field line for a base hit. She followed it up by stealing second and reaching third before being stranded there to close the top of the first inning.
• Pitt got on the board first with back-to-back doubles from Desirae Martinez and Ana Hernandez, sending Martinez in, in the bottom of the second inning. The Panthers added two more runs to the score sheet before closing out the inning.
• Memphis got its first run of the season off the bat of Dixon, who tripled to right center, driving Cox-Cole in for the Tigers.
• The Panthers matched the Tigers run in the bottom of the third inning, sending Greer in for the score off a single to center field. Pitt added another run, from a single to left field allowing Cami Compson to reach home.
• Memphis put together a strong performance in the top of the fifth inning. Zoe Adebayo was walked with bases loaded, allowing Bates to score her first run of the season for the Tigers.
• Khamiyah Brown followed up with a two-run single to right-center field, bringing in Marley Maness and Aaliyah Dixon to bring the score within one in the top of the fifth.
• Pitt put up another run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly to right field from Kat Rodriguez, increasing its lead to a pair.
NOTABLES
• Rylee Dugar got the start going 1.2 innings and recorded one strikeout. Taniyah Brown came in as relief for Dugar in the bottom of the second inning going 4.1 innings with one strikeout.
• Four Tigers recorded runs in the game: Cox-Cole, Dixon, Maness and Bates.
• Memphis recorded seven hits: Brown (2), Cox-Cole (2), Dixon (2) and Bates.

• Aubrey Williams notched her first career hit sending a rocket to left field to open the top of the third inning. However, the Tigers were unable to capitalize with players on base.
• LSU put up two more runs in the bottom of the third inning with back-to-back singles from Maci Bergeron and Sierra Daniel, bringing in McKenzie Redoutey and Tori Edwards to score. LSU continued to add to their lead recording three more runs before closing the inning.
• Memphis managed to load the bases with no outs to start the top of the fourth inning but were unable to convert for any runs.
NOTABLES
• Brown got the start going 2.2 innings with one strikeout before Dugar entered the game as relief in the bottom of the third inning facing six batters during her time in the circle.
• The Tigers recorded two hits in the game from Polk and Williams along with Adebayo, Polk, and K. Brown recording walks in the top of the fourth inning.
