No. 22 Tigers Suffer First Defeat Against No. 9 Stanford

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 22 Memphis men's tennis team opened the ITA Kick-Off Weekend with a 4-0 loss to No. 9 Stanford Saturday morning on the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

The defeat was the first of the spring season for Memphis, who falls to 4-1. The Tigers will face off against Nevada at 10 a.m. CT Sunday morning in the consolation match.
Stanford (2-0) quickly grabbed the doubles point with a pair of 6-3 victories on courts one and two.

The Cardinal kept their momentum rolling with three-straight sweeps in singles action to clinch the match.

Memphis' Pablo Alemany fell 6-4, 6-0 on the top line, while Conor Gannon dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision on court two. The match was clinched on court five where Juan Zabala suffered a 6-1, 7-5 loss.

"Stanford played very well today," Memphis head coach Chris Doerr said. "They played the big points aggressively and made some big shots. I was particularly impressed with Harry and Moritz. Harry played a great first set and then continued the momentum, while Moritz typified our toughness and found a way to stay in the second to give us a chance.

"I was proud of how we fought and how we looked like we belonged with a big-time team. We have had a great start and cannot wait to get back on court tomorrow."
