10th-Ranked Tigers Fall to Tulane on the Road
Jan 21, 2024 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – The 10th-ranked University of Memphis men's basketball team fell on the road to American Athletic Conference opponent Tulane, 81-79, inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena Sunday afternoon in New Orleans.
The Tigers (15-4, 4-2 AAC) found themselves in a deadlock with the Green Wave (12-6, 3-3 AAC) at half (34-34) and trailed by two with 13 seconds remaining with possession after forcing a Tulane shot-clock violation. A pair of three-point attempts in the final seconds would not fall as senior forward David Jones' big second half (22 points) proved not enough.
Jones totaled 32 points in the loss and pulled down 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Malcolm Dandridge had his best game as a Tiger, putting up 13 points, eight rebounds and eight blocks. It was the most blocks by a Tiger since Dedric Lawson (8) against UAB on Dec. 10, 2016, finishing one off the program's single-game mark.
Jaykwon Walton scored 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from deep in 17 minutes and Jahvon Quinerly added 11 points and a team-high six assists.
Tulane was led by Sion James' 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Kevin Cross finished with 21 points, seven boards and five dimes. The duo combined for five triples and a 12-for-14 day at the free throw line.
A turning point in the game came with just over six minutes remaining with the Tigers leading 70-65. In a 20-second sequence, James converted two at the stripe for the Green Wave and Cross forced a turnover. On the ensuing possession, Quinerly was whistled for a flagrant foul that gave Tulane two more free throws. Cross then got a layup that resulted in a 6-0 run that put Tulane back in front. The Tigers never recovered.
Memphis shot 46.7 percent (28-60) on the night and made 9-of-24 from long distance (37.5%). They also drained 14-of-22 at the free throw line (63.3%).
UP NEXT
Memphis will get a few days to rest before hitting the road next Sunday (Jan. 28) for UAB. The Tigers and Blazers will tip at 4 p.m. on ESPN.
