MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team is set to host UT Martin in the annual W.S. Babe Howard Classic at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
Honoring the memory of W.S. 'Babe' Howard and his work with the game of baseball throughout the region, the Tigers are set to host their 15th annual memorial game.
"We're happy to pay homage to the late Babe Howard with the annual Babe Howard Classic," University of Memphis Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Laird Veatch said. "His contributions to Memphis Athletics were invaluable, apparent by his M-Club Hall of Fame introduction. Through Laura and Ray Rosas' philanthropic leadership, Babe's legacy will forever be tied to Memphis Baseball, and we're happy to shine light on his works in the community."
When Memphis Baseball underwent a large-scale construction project for FedExPark the first time in 2009, the UofM approached the Howard Family about using USA Stadium for home games during the renovation and the family happily agreed. In 2017, Babe's daughter – Laura Howard Rosas and her husband Ray – gave the lead gift for the W.S. Babe Howard Training Facility, which includes a locker room, players' lounge, training room, turf room for skill development, multi-use room and coaches' offices.
"It's wonderful to see firsthand the difference that one person can make in his community," Howard's daughter, Laura Howard Rosas said. "The Howard family would love to see and visit with anyone who was impacted by Babe's involvement with baseball at Tuesday's game."
A video will be shown prior to the game on the new video board in right field as well as a ceremonial first pitch.
Memphis (20-20, 4-8) are coming off a 1-2 weekend at home. The Tigers picked up the win on Saturday as lefty Dalton Fowler limited Houston to just three hits and a pair of runs in six innings to earn his third-consecutive win. Over his first four AAC starts, he's 3-0 and has allowed just three runs over 25 innings, also racking up 36 strikeouts over that stretch.
"Hopefully, we enjoy this win and prepare ourselves for the conference weekend against UCF," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "Hopefully this gives us some momentum to have a good weekend and put ourselves in position to win a series."
The Skyhawks (13-28, 7-8) enter the matchup after dropping a series to Tennessee Tech two games to one over the weekend. Offensively, UT Martin is led by Andrew Fernandez (.317 BA, 6 HR, 36 RBI) and Jack Culumovic (.294 BA, 8 HR, 32 RBI).
Memphis leads the all-time series with UT Martin, 35-6, and is seeking its 10th-straight win over the Skyhawks.
First baseman Anthony Hansen has hit safely in 29-of-38 games this season and carries a .310 average to go with a team-leading 10 home runs and .424 on-base percentage. Hansen has driven in 23 runs on the season.
Austin Baskin and Logan Kohler are each three hits shy of Hansen for the team lead (42). Kohler is batting a team-best .313 with six home runs and seven doubles on the year. Baskin has tallied a team-leading 14 multi-hit games this season and carries a season average of .273 with nine doubles and seven home runs. Outfielder Cameron Benson has reached base safely in nine-straight games.
