Apr 13, 2023 | Softball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger softball team look to add more wins to their stat line as they travel to East Carolina for a conference matchup after defeating UT-Martin 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers (7-32) have recorded one conference win in their series final against Tulsa on April 2. Memphis sits seventh in conference rankings one spot behind East Carolina.
"We are looking forward to the games this weekend and using the momentum from the win over UT-Martin to help us," head coach Stephanie VanBrakle Prothro said. "We've been setting goals and the girls have been working hard and pushing through and fighting to the end of games. We're going to keep with the process and hope it ends with some wins at East Carolina this weekend."
East Carolina (23-17) is currently harboring a one-game losing streak after splitting its series with Houston April 6-8. The Pirates hold a 1-8 conference record, boasting the same record as the Tigers, however, holding the sixth ranking due to their better overall record. East Carolina took the series last year in Memphis and look to add more wins to its record.
Two Tigers are currently hitting .300 or higher: Madison Berner and Sam Ibison. Aliana Zavala and Meagan Chism lead the team in RBIs, Zavala with 18 followed closely by Chism with 17. Zavala leads Memphis in homeruns with four on the season with Kendall Lee, Chism and Berner following closely behind with two apiece. Ibison also leads the Tigers in hits with 32 with Berner right behind recording 29 so far. Pitcher Hallie Siems leads the Tigers with 79 strikeouts so far on the season.
Memphis will begin the series against East Carolina Friday, April 14 at 4 p.m. in Greenville, N.C.
