Tigers’ Winning Streak Snapped, Nicholls Evens Series
Mar 04, 2023 | Baseball
"Tough loss today," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "At the end of the day it comes down to playing clean. Of the nine runs they scored I think we gave them four. We had opportunities to spread the lead further and let them crawl back in it. We pitched around some things, but we should have done a little better in those situations to put ourselves in a better position to win that ball game."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Nicholls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
• A solo homerun to dead center field off the bat of Logan Kohler got the Tigers on the board in the third inning to jump start a five-run inning.
• An RBI single by Austin Baskin made it a 3-2 game before Jonah Sutton stepped to the plate and smashed a three-run bomb to left-center field to give Memphis a 5-3 lead.
• Kohler added an RBI single in the fifth inning, driving in Sutton. An RBI double by Brayland Skinner brought home Shane Cox to extend Memphis' lead to 7-3.
• Nicholls scratched back for a run of its own in the bottom half of the fifth on an RBI double by Edgar Alvarez and added another in the sixth to make it a 7-5 game.
• Tyler Heckert, who made a handful of great defensive plays in the game, provided an RBI single back up the middle for the Tigers that scored Braden Webb in the seventh inning to make the score 8-5.
• The Colonels scored on a passed ball in the eighth and loaded the bases to start the inning in the ninth. A two-run single that fell just inside the left-field line plated two Colonels to tie the game at 8-8 before a hit batsman would force in the winning run.
NOTABLES
• Kohler was 3-for-3 in the game with a homerun, two RBI, a walk and a run scored.
• Lefty JT Durham pitched five innings and allowed just one earned run, striking out four and allowing six hits.
• Sutton finished the game 2-for-5 with a homerun, three RBI and a pair of runs scored.
• Luke Ellis was the pitcher of record for Memphis, taking the loss.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers are back at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux tomorrow afternoon for the series finale and a chance to win the series. Freshman Seth Garner will make his third start of the season on the mound for the Tigers.
