Memphis Comes from Behind Twice, Scraps Out 7-6 Win Over ASU
Mar 22, 2023 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team came from behind, twice, to take down Arkansas State, 7-6, on Wednesday night at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field. The Tigers used a four-run seventh inning to rally from a three-run deficit and hung on for the win.
With the win, Memphis improved to 13-9 on the season and has won three-straight games and five of its last six. The Red Wolves dropped to 7-13 on the season with the loss.
"Great come-back win tonight," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "We had some up and down pitching performances and had some guys pick up some guys who were struggling a bit. Kind of up and down offensively as well but had some guys come up with some timely hits. We played an all-around good game, and these guys are showing they have the ability to come from behind and make some things happen and we're excited about that."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• ASU got out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, scoring on a sac-fly and a wild pitch off pitcher Hudson Ross, who was making his first collegiate start for the Tigers.
• Memphis tied the game in the second inning. Shane Cox delivered the first run of the game for the Tigers when he singled through the left side to bring home Jonah Sutton from second base. Memphis got its second run of the frame on a sac-fly to left field off the bat of Cameron Benson that scored Jake Curtis.
• The Tigers took their first lead of the game in the fourth inning when Cox came in to score on a wild pitch.
• ASU jumped back into the lead with a four-run fifth inning. A solo shot from leadoff man Wil French started the scoring before an RBI single and a two-run double made the score 6-3, Red Wolves.
• The Tigers exploded for four runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Brayland Skinner led the inning off with a stand-up triple to set the table. Sutton singled up the middle to score Skinner, then Curtis launched his first homerun as a Tiger into the visitor's bullpen in left field to tie the game at 6-6.
• A single by Josh Russell and a walk by RJ Jimerson prolonged the inning and led to the Tigers taking the lead on an error by ASU's second baseman with two away in the inning on a hard-hit ball by Anthony Hansen.
• Jackson Lyons entered to pitch in the eighth and picked up a pair of strikeouts before handing the ball off to closer Dalton Kendrick, who slammed the door on the Red Wolves to pick up his AAC-leading seventh save of the season.
NOTABLES
• The Tigers used six pitchers in the game (Ross, Stinnett, Green III, Ellis, Lyons, Kendrick).
