Lions Even Series to Force Sunday Rubber Match with Tigers
Mar 18, 2023 | Baseball
HAMMOND, La. – The University of Memphis baseball team dropped game two of its series with Southeastern Louisiana, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. SLU evened the series with the Tigers at one game apiece after Memphis won game one, 4-3, Friday night.
With the setback, Memphis moves to 10-9 on the season. The Lions improved to 12-7 on the season with the victory.
"Not our best game today," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "I thought we lacked a little bit on the competitive side of things. Our hitters didn't make any adjustments and their pitcher did a nice job of coming out and attacking us… We have to come out tomorrow and put ourselves in a position to win the series. We have to play better baseball tomorrow and if we can be a little more competitive, we'll put ourselves in a good position."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Southeastern struck first with a pair of runs in the first, coming on a walk and an RBI single.
• A three-run fifth inning made it a 5-0 lead for SLU. They scored runs on a fielder's choice and a two-run single by Shea Thomas.
• The Lions tacked on another run in the sixth on a Tyler Finke double to left field.
• Memphis got its lone run of the contest on a Logan Kohler RBI single into center field that scored Brayland Skinner from second after he led off the inning with a double to left field. Skinner was originally called out on a close play at the plate, but upon further review, he was called safe.
NOTABLES
• Left-handed pitcher Dalton Fowler (1-3) made his fifth start of the year, lasting 4.1 innings and allowing five earned runs. He struck out five Lions and allowed two walks.
• Skinner registered his second game in a row with a pair of hits from the four spot in the order, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored.
• Kohler went 1-for-4 in the game with an RBI single.
• Austin Baskin and Cameron Benson each tallied a hit for the Tigers.
UP NEXT
• The Tigers are back Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field tomorrow for the series finale and rubber match, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Freshman Seth Garner (0-2) will make his fifth start of the season for Memphis against SLU right-hander Andrew Landry (2-1).
