Feb 27, 2023 | Baseball
CONWAY, Ark. – The University of Memphis baseball travels to Conway, Ark., on Tuesday for a mid-week game with Central Arkansas at Bear Field. First pitch is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Tigers (6-2) won a mid-week game over Mississippi Valley State last week, exploding for 19 runs on 19 hits in a 19-10 win. Hudson Ross picked up the win for Memphis, striking out five and allowing two unearned runs in three innings of relief. Six Tigers collected multiple hits in the contest. Shane Cox, making his first start of the season, went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBI.
Memphis went on to win its weekend series with Youngstown State, taking three-of-four games including a 6-5 walk-off win on Sunday afternoon. In that win, Dalton Kendrick earned the win after throwing 1.2 hitless innings of relief, striking out a pair. Tyler Heckert played hero all day for Memphis. He gave the Tigers their first lead of the day with a two-run homerun in the sixth and tied the game up again at 5-5 in the eighth before walking it off with the bases loaded and two away in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI-single up the middle.
"Our guys fought the whole way and showed some grit there" head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "Any time you can take three games from a team in a four-game set, that's plus. I thought our guys did an awesome job of competing."
A pair of Tigers earned American Athletic Conference (AAC) Weekly Honor Roll selections for their stand-out performances throughout the week. Senior first baseman Anthony Hansen and junior left-handed pitcher JT Durham were both honored for their contributions. Hansen and Durham became the second and third Tigers honored this season, joining Brayland Skinner.
Hansen batted .500 on the week (10-for-20) with a pair of home runs, three doubles and three RBI. He added five walks, scored seven runs and stole three bases. Hansen leads the AAC in on-base percentage (.595) and walks (12 – double the next most), and ranks second in hits (13), home runs (4), slugging percentage (.933) and total bases (28). The senior from Columbia, Mo., has an eight-game hitting streak going to begin his Tiger career.
Durham (1-0) made his second appearance and his first start of the season in the second game of Saturday's double header with Youngstown State and was dominant. The Memphis native tossed seven shutout innings and earned the win, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out seven in Memphis' 3-1 win.
The Bears (3-4) enter Tuesday losers in three straight after picking up a 5-4 win at No. 10 Vanderbilt on Feb. 21. Tanner Leonard (.500) and Drew Sturgeon (.310, three HR, three 2B) lead the Bears offensively.
All fans will receive free admission to Tiger home games in February and March, and kids ages 12 and under get in free all season long. Half-season ticket packages are available at GoTigersGo.com for all games beginning in April.
