MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis Tigers men's soccer team looks to continue its winning streak this weekend when they make the trip to UAB for a Saturday night match-up.
Memphis (6-3-2, 1-3 AAC) is coming off a big week where it collected wins over then No. 9-ranked Missouri State and AAC opponent Tulsa. While Giorgos Kondylis notched the game-winning goal against the Bears, Logan Longo and Lineker Rodrigues dos Santosalso scored against the Golden Hurricane.
"I know those are tough games and I schedule them for a reason, but I'm really happy with the result," head coach Richard Mulrooneysaid. "We did a great job getting the shutout with a complete performance against Missouri State to break that five-game winless streak."
For the season, dos Santos leads the team with eight goals while Jackson Kim has notched three. Between the pipes, JD Gunn has started the last two games for the Tigers, making 10 saves and allowing just one goal in 180 minutes of work – enough to earn him AAC Goalkeeper of the Week honors.
Along with Gunn, Kondylis was named as the American Athletic Conference's Rookie of the Week, while Longo was tabbed as the TopDrawerSoccer National Player of the Week.
UAB (0-8-4, 0-4-1 AAC) comes into Saturday's match on a four-game losing skid that was extended this past Wednesday night against Purdue Fort Wayne, where the Blazers dropped a 3-1 decision.
For the season, Isaac Calderon and Humphrey Doh lead the team offensively with two goals each, while Jack Hudson has played the majority in goal for UAB with 29 saves in 792 minutes of work.
"We've got to focus on this game. We've had a good week of training, but at the end of the day it's a tough conference game. I know that the guys are up for the challenge," Mulrooney added.
Memphis and UAB are no stranger to one another, meeting 42 times in the past, with the Tigers taking the previous three wins over the Blazers.
The last time these two programs met, Eric Primo and Gabriel Christensen netted back-to-back goals in the first half for the 2-0 win.
Saturday's match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start with coverage available on ESPN+.
