May 04, 2022 | Baseball
Memphis: 11, UT Martin: 10, 12 innings
WP: Logan Rushing (2-0)
LP: Noah Walters (1-2)
SV: N/A
How it happened:
- The early portion of the midweek matchup was a battle of home runs, as the Skyhawks took an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the second inning from RF Will LaFollette, the Tigers answered on 1B Chris Swanberg's two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning, and UT Martin retook the lead 3-2 on a two-run home run from SS Casey Harford in the third
- Memphis tied the game on a two-out RBI single by SS Ben Brooks in the third and took the lead on Compton's two-out two-run single in the fifth, which put Memphis in front 5-3
- The Skyhawks rallied with two outs in the sixth against RHP Chase Kessinger and LHP Jacob Gilmore, as two walks and an error led to one run and a pitching change, while Harford put UT Martin back in front 6-5 with a two-run single
- After the Skyhawks added a run in the eighth that put them in front 7-5, Memphis answered with a five-run home half of the frame that saw the Tigers bat around
- 2B Austin Baskin tied the game with a two-out, two-strike, two-run home run, an RBI single by Brooks put the Tigers in front 8-7, and a two-run double by Compton made it 10-7 Memphis
- Down to their final three outs, the Skyhawks rallied against LHP Dalton Kendrick in his second inning of work
- The first three UT Martin hitters reached in the ninth, as 2B Alec Beaman made it a two run game with an RBI single, and CF Will Smith tied the game one batter later with a two-run home run down the right field line
- The Skyhawks had the go-ahead runner at second base with no outs in the ninth, but Kendrick retired the 3-4-5 hitters in order to keep the game tied
- Baskin doubled with one out in the bottom of the 12th, while 3B Logan Kohler drew a two-out walk and Brooks loaded the bases with a sharp single to left field
- With the bases loaded and two outs, UT Martin went back to the bullpen, as LHP Warren Lee entered for Walters
- On just his third pitch of the outing, Walters hit Compton in the hands on a 1-1 pitch, which forced Baskin in and gave Memphis the 11-10 win in 4:33, the Tigers' longest game this season
Notables:
- RF Blake Daniels (0-4) had his season-long 18-game on-base streak snapped, while LF Ian Bibiloni (1-3) and CF Zach Wilson (1-6) extended their respective on-base streaks to 16 and 14
- Compton's season-high five RBIs are the most for any Tigers player in a game this season and his team-best tying 10th multi-RBI game of the year
- With two RBIs, Swanberg also recorded his 10th multi-RBI game of the season
- Brooks (3-6) tallied his fifth game with at least three hits this season, the most on the team, while Compton (2-5) notched his team-leading 15th multi-hit game of the season
