Memphis Falls to Arkansas State 14-8 in Home Finale
May 10, 2022 | Baseball
Memphis: 8, Arkansas State: 14
WP: Jakob Frederick (1-2)
LP: David Warren (0-3)
SV: N/A
How it happened:
- After Warren retired the first hitter of the night, four straight Red Wolves reached base, as C Brandon Hager, LF Jaylon Deshazier, and DH Jacob Hager each had an RBI that put Arkansas State in front 3-0 after half an inning
- Memphis responded against RHP Brandon Anderson (ND), as an RBI double by SS Ben Brooks plated CF Zach Wilson, while DH Jacob Compton followed with a game-tying two-run home run, as the game was knotted 3-3 after one frame
- The Red Wolves sent 11 men to the plate in a five-run second, as all four batters Warren faced reached base and eventually scored, while B. Hager greeted LHP Logan Rushing with a three-run home run that put Arkansas State in front 8-3, a lead the Red Wolves never relinquished
- Arkansas State added two in the third on a home run by 3B Ben Klutts, while a bevy of Arkansas State pitchers kept Memphis off the scoreboard until the eighth
- Trailing 12-3 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, Memphis rallied for four runs against a trio of Red Wolves pitchers, as 2B Austin Baskin plated a pair with a two-strike, two-out single, while C Brennan DuBose followed with a two-run home run, as Memphis cut the deficit to 12-8 heading to the final frame
- The Red Wolves tagged LHP Daniel Casto for a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth, while Memphis got two runners on but stranded both in the frame, as the Tigers fell 14-8
Notables:
- Compton (3-4) and Brooks (2-4) each recorded their team-best 16th multi-hit games of the season, while Compton's two RBIs gave him a team-high 11 multi-RBI games this year
- Brooks extended his on-base streak to 11 games, while LF Ian Bibiloni (0-3) had his 19-game on-base streak end
Up Next:
- With the home campaign wrapped up, Memphis will head to Cincinnati this weekend for a series with the Bearcats, with first pitch of the opener Friday set for 4 p.m.
- The Tigers will then travel to New Orleans for a three-game set with Tulane before a trip to Clearwater for the AAC Tournament
