Brooks’ Cycle Not Enough as Tigers Fall 10-6
May 01, 2022 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Despite SS Ben Brooks hitting for the cycle, the Memphis Tigers (20-21, 5-10) fell behind early and never got closer than four in a 10-6 loss to the Wichita State Shockers (15-29, 4-11). Brooks went 4-5 with three RBIs for Memphis' first cycle since C Taylor Howell matched the feat in a 23-8 win over Western Illinois, March 1, 2020.

Memphis: 6, Wichita State: 10
WP: Payton Tolle (3-5)
LP: Blake Wimberley (2-6)
SV: N/A
How it happened:
- After he retired the first seven batters he faced and eight of the first nine, Wimberley saw the Shockers tally five straight hits with two outs in the third, as 2B Brock Rodden, 2B Sawyre Thornhill, LF Jordan Rogers (2), and DH Garrett Kocis each had an RBI hit in the frame, which put the Shockers in front 5-0 after 2.5 innings
- Tolle held Memphis off the scoreboard until his final inning, though the Tigers had three extra-base hits over the first four innings, with both a double and triple by Brooks and a double by CF Zach Wilson
- Wichita State added two in the fourth on a two-out, two-run single by Rodden, while a two-run home run from C Ross Cadena in the sixth pushed the Shockers' lead to 9-0
- The first four Memphis hitters reached safely against Tolle in the sixth, as a single by DH Jacob Compton got Memphis on the board, while Howell and 3B Logan Kohler each picked up an RBI in the inning, as the Tigers scored three times in the frame and cut the deficit to 9-3
- After the Shockers got an insurance run in the seventh on a home run by Kocis, the score remained 10-3 until the bottom of the ninth
- Brooks, who tripled in the first, doubled in the fourth, and singled in the sixth, homered with two outs in the ninth, as his three-run blast gave him the cycle and made it 10-6, the eventual final
Notables:
- RF Blake Daniels extended his on-base streak to 18 games with a sixth inning double
- With two walks and a HBP, LF Ian Bibiloni has reached in 15 consecutive games, while Wilson's third inning double extended his on-base streak to 13 straight games
- Brooks' four-hit game was his second such game this season and 12th multi-hit game of the year, while his 3 RBIs matched a season high and gave him a team-best four three-RBI games this season
