Knights Score Early and Often as Memphis Falls 13-3
Apr 09, 2022 | Baseball
Memphis: 3, UCF: 13, 7 Inn.
WP: Ben Vespi (2-2)
LP: Dalton Fowler (1-2)
SV: N/A
How it happened:
- After he retired the first batter of the afternoon, Fowler saw six straight Knights reach base, as SS Alex Freeland started the stretch with a solo home run, while LF Lex Boedicker, C Andrew Sundean, and 2B Ryan Taylor each had a run-scoring double in the frame, as UCF led 5-0 before Memphis came to the plate
- UCF added two runs in the second, as the first four batters each singled, three off of Fowler and one off of LHP Jacob Gilmore
- Memphis started to chip away at the early deficit in the home half of the second, as C Brennan DuBose launched a two-out, two-run home run to straightaway centerfield, which cut Memphis' deficit to five at 7-2
- Freeland connected on his second home run of the day, as his two-run blast in the third made it 9-2 UCF
- The Knights added a run in the sixth on a two-out RBI double by Sundean, and three more in the seventh off of RHP Jackson Lyons
- Down 13-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Tigers got a two-out RBI single from DH Jacob Compton before RHP Chase Centala retired 1B Chris Swanberg to keep the UCF lead at 10 runs and thus elicited the run-rule, as the Knights leveled the series with a 13-3 win
Notables:
- Compton's RBI single extended his on-base streak to a season-high 22 games
- Swanberg and SS Ben Brooks each had two hits, their seventh and eighth multi-hit games of the season respectively
Up Next:
- The Tigers and Knights will meet at 12 p.m. Sunday in the rubber match of the three-game series
- Memphis will play seven straight on the road after Sunday's series finale, with the next home game set for April 26
