TULSA, Okla. – For the first time the Memphis Tigers are champions of the American Athletic Conference, as the fourth-seeded Tiger women's tennis team bested third-seeded Tulsa, 4-1, Saturday evening in Tulsa, Okla.
With the win, No. 55 Memphis (20-6) earns a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history, along with 2013. The Tigers' 20 wins on the season are their most since winning 23 matches in 1987.
Memphis will learn its NCAA Tournament destination during the NCAA.com Selection Show on Monday, May 2 at 5:30 p.m. The first round of the tournament begins Friday, May 6.
"I am absolutely ecstatic for the girls," Memphis head coach Hayden Perez said. "They played amazing and showed their character and grit when they fought back after losing the doubles. They keep impressing me and Ryan with their fight. These girls have overcome so many obstacles in order to achieve this. A huge thanks to my administration for their support and to my associate head coach Ryan Haymond. He is the best in the business and deserves so much credit for our success.
"All that said, this is all about the girls. All about the girls. They came to play today, and it was an impressive win."
The Tigers fell behind after doubles play but responded in fine fashion, winning the first six singles sets. Emily Meyer and Alisha Reayer were the first to win their points, 6-2, 6-1 on court four and 6-4, 6-1 on court three, respectively. Monique Woog gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead with a 6-2, 7-5 win on court six, and Camila Soares cliched the trophy for Memphis with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph on court five.
Soares was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after going 2-0 in singles during the week, including the championship clincher, with one unfinished match.
