Tigers Wrap Up Historic Season with 4-1 Defeat in NCAA Tournament
May 06, 2022 | Women's Tennis
AUBURN, Ala. – The American Athletic Conference champion Memphis Tiger women's tennis team bowed out of the 2022 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-1 first-round loss to No. 33 Georgia Tech Friday in Auburn, Ala.
Â
No. 52 Memphis' season wraps up with a 20-7 record. The Tigers' 20 wins on the season are their most since winning 23 matches in 1987. Memphis was appearing in its second NCAA Tournament in program history, joining 2013.
Â
"It was a tough loss today, but I'm very proud of this group for not only how they fought today but how they fought all year long," AAC Coach of the Year Hayden Perez said. "Today's match was closer than the score reflected. We were battling so hard to split sets and close out some matches there at the end. Georgia Tech played well, and we wish them luck tomorrow."
Â
After a very close doubles competition that included Aran Teixido Garcia/Camila Romero unfinished against Georgia Tech's fourth-ranked tandem, Memphis' Camila Soares picked up a point for the Tigers on singles Court 5, 6-3, 6-4. Two unfinished singles matches were tied in the second set.
Â
"I can't say enough about this year and what it has meant to me both personally and professionally," Perez continued. "This group was special, period. One of my favorite moments today happened while we talked as a group after the match. One of our returning players said through some tears, 'I am already ready for next year.' That is the kind of culture you want to create. I am looking forward to it, too.
Â
"I have a lot of thank you messages to send out for all the great support we get. Ryan Haymond, our associate head coach, is at the top of the list. We couldn't do it without this guy."
