Fowler’s Dominant Start Not Enough in 5-2 Loss to Tulane
Apr 02, 2022 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Behind the best starting pitching performance of the season, a 13-strikeout, eight-inning outing from LHP Dalton Fowler (ND), the Memphis Tigers (12-11, 0-2) were four defensive outs away from snapping a five-game losing streak before the Tulane Green Wave (18-9-1, 2-0) got a game-tying two-out eighth inning home run from LF Simon Baumgardt and then scored three times in the ninth to win the middle game of the weekend set 5-2 over the Tigers. Fowler allowed two runs on four hits and walked three in the no-decision.

SV: Zach DeVito (6)
How it happened:
- Fowler walked the first batter that he faced, as RF Ethan Groff drew the free pass and later scored on an RBI groundout by C Bennett Lee
- The Memphis starter then worked out of a bases loaded jam in the third and faced just one over the minimum from the fourth through seventh innings
- The Tigers tied the game in the home half of the second, as 1B Chris Swanberg's RBI single made it 1-1
- LF Braden Webb led off the bottom of the third with a base hit off of LHP Dylan Carmouche (ND) and scored on a two-out RBI single by DH Jacob Compton, which gave the Tigers their only lead of the day, 2-1
- A quartet of Tulane relief pitchers faced just one over the minimum over the final 4.1 innings
- After two quick outs in the eighth, Fowler surrendered the game-tying home run to Baumgardt, though the left-handed starter got the final out of the inning to close out his dominant performance
- After Wimberley retired the leadoff hitter in the ninth, the Green Wave used three straight singles, a wild pitch, and an error, to plate three runs and take a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth
- As the fifth pitcher of the day for Tulane, DeVito gave up a one-out single to Swanberg, his fourth hit of the game, but struck out the side for his conference-leading sixth save and Tulane's 5-2 victory
Notables:
- Swanberg's four hits match the most by a Memphis player this season and it was just the second four-hit performance of the season for the Tigers
- The four-hit game extended Swanberg's hit streak to nine games and on-base streak to 13 games
- With his RBI single in the third, Compton has now reached base in 18 straight games, which matches the longest streak for a Tigers player this season
Up Next:
- The Tigers will aim to avoid the sweep in the series finale Sunday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
- Memphis will then hit the road for midweek matchups at North Alabama and Middle Tennessee State
