Tigers Hit Three Home Runs but Fall 14-9 to Nicholls
Mar 05, 2022 | Baseball
Memphis: 9, Nicholls: 14
WP: Tyler Theriot (2-1)
LP: Dalton Fowler (0-1)
SV: Nick Heckman (1)
How it happened:
- Nicholls couldn't have gotten off to a better start, as the first four Colonels that faced Fowler in the opening frame reached base and eventually scored
- Fowler settled in and allowed just one more run, as he was charged with five runs over 4.2 innings in the loss
- The Colonels busted the game open in the sixth, as four singles, a walk, and a HBP led to a three-run frame and an 8-0 lead
- Memphis clawed back and cut the deficit in half in the seventh, as Wilson's three-run home run put the Tigers on the board and Daniels made it back-to-back home runs with a solo blast
- LHP Daniel Casto, who got the final out of the seventh for the Tigers, couldn't get through the eighth, as Nicholls answered right back with four runs on just two hits, as the Colonels led 12-4 after 7.5 innings
- A two-run home run by Kohler in the home half of the eighth pulled the Tigers within six, but Nicholls added a pair of insurance runs to lead 14-6 in the ninth
- The Tigers didn't go quietly, as they batted around in the final frame against RHP Devin Desandro and Heckman, with runs on an RBI single from 2B Austin Baskin and two consecutive bases loaded walks
- Nicholls turned to Heckman with the bases loaded and one out in the final frame, and the righty struck out C Brennan DuBose before he got LF Braden Webb to fly out and wrap up Nicholls' 14-9 win
Notables:
- CF Zach Wilson's three RBIs matched his career high
- 2B Austin Baskin had three hits for the second consecutive day, the first time he has done so in his collegiate career
- With three RBIs, 3B Logan Kohler notched his second game with at least three RBIs this season
- Eight of the nine Memphis starters recorded at least one hit
Up Next:
- The Tigers will try to avoid the sweep with the series finale vs. Nicholls set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
- Memphis will then hit the road for the first time this season, with trips to Ole Miss and Samford next week
