Tigers Drop Two in Opening Day of Blues City Classic

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger softball team opened play at home today with the first day of the Blues City Classic. The Tigers hosted Butler and Iowa in their first two games of the weekend, but ultimately fell 7-1 to Butler and 8-0 to Iowa.
Following today's games, Memphis moves to 5-11 overall.

How it happened:
- Gracie Morton put the Tigers on the board in the bottom of the first inning when she scored off a sac fly from Camryn Wineinger.
- Memphis would hold their 1-0 lead until the top of the third inning when the Bulldogs scored four runs to make it a 4-1 ballgame.
- The Tigers would put runners in scoring position in both the third and fourth innings, but the Butler defense held steady.
- Butler would add runs in the fourth and sixth innings to eventually take the 7-1 final.
- Kendall Lee, Sam Ibison and Taylor Smrt all picked up hits in the game.
- Kailey Hilderbrand got the start for game one of the day going 2.2 innings while Drue Thomas, Zoey LeCompte and Mikayla Hoschak finished the remaining 4.1 innings combined.
How it happened:
- Gracie Morton, Camryn Wineinger and Kendall Lee all collected hits for the Tigers in the first and sixth innings.
- Wineinger and Taylor Smrt also reached base for the Tigers after drawing walks in the first and third innings, respectively. But, the Memphis offense was unable to bring them around the diamond for runs.
- Iowa recorded runs in the first, third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to end up with the 8-0 win.
- Hallie Siems got the start for game two today, going 3.0 innings with three strikeouts. Mikayla Hoschak and Zoey LeComptefinished out the remaining 4.0 innings of work with three combined strikeouts.
- Memphis will continue play in the Blues City Classic tomorrow when they host IUPUI. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
- The Tigers will finish up the weekend on Sunday when they take on Indiana State and UT Martin. First pitches for both games are scheduled for 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
