Tigers Hit the Road for Games Against ECU, SMU
Feb 12, 2022 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn.– The Tigers will hit the road once again when they take on the Pirates of East Carolina on Sunday afternoon before heading to Texas to make the return trip for their series with SMU.
Memphis (13-8, 4-6 AAC) is coming off a heartbreaking home loss to Tulane. After finding themselves down by as much as 11, Memphis would all the way back to cut their deficit to as little as two after back-to-back three- pointers from Tye Jones and Maya Stovall. But a late shot from Tulane would make it a two-possession game with just 13 seconds left. Emani Jefferson was able to get a short jumper to fall at the buzzer, but Memphis would suffer the 76-74 loss.
Jamirah Shutes leads the team in scoring with 11.9 points per game while Jefferson is not far behind her with 9.8 points. On the boards, Tyler Frierson and Lanetta Williams have been the biggest contributors with 5.7 and 5.3 rebounds per contests, respectively.
ECU (9-14, 2-8 AAC) just broke a five-game losing skid after taking down Wichita State in overtime on Wednesday night. After being outscored 24-8 in the second quarter, the Pirates would climb all the way back and force OT after Taniyah Thompson sank three consecutive free throws with six seconds left in regulation. It would be Thompson again in OT with the go-ahead bucket to give ECU the 61-59 win.
For the season, Thompson had been the offensive spark for ECU with 17.4 points per game and shooting just under 40% from the field. As a team, the Pirates have struggled from long range, shooting just 25% from beyond the three-point arc.
SMU (11-8, 5-2 AAC) has been on a hot streak, winning seven of their last nine games including their most recent win over Cincinnati.
An explosive first quarter from the Mustangs put them up 21-12 after Savannah Wilkinson scored nine of her 15 points in the opening 10 minutes of the game. SMU would hold their lead for the rest of the game and walk away with the 71-66 win over the Bearcats.
SMU had five score in double figures over Cincinnati with Kayla White lead the way with 16 points while Wilkinson, Sydne Wiggins, Reagan Bradley and Danielle Sanderlin all added in 10 points or more.
For the season, Wilkinson leads the team with a double-double of 15.0 points and 10.3 rebounds while White and Wiggins are adding in a combined 25 points per contest. The Mustangs are averaging an AAC second-best 15.4 assists per game and the second-lowest amount of turnovers in the conference.
The Mustangs and Tigers met earlier this season where SMU's explosive first half helped them to the 63-44 win over Memphis.
Coverage for both games can be found on ESPN+ and on News Talk 98.9 The Roar of Memphis with Tyler Springs on the call.
