Tigers Fall to Pirates in Opening Game of Road Trip
Feb 13, 2022 | Women's Basketball
GREENVILLE, N.C.– The Memphis women's basketball faced a rough day against the Pirates of ECU, stricken by turnovers and a tough Pirate defense. While the Tigers did all they could, they suffered the 68-38 loss.
Following today's game, Memphis moves to 13-9 overall and 4-7 in AAC play.
Struggling to get any offense going in the first half, Memphis scored their lowest point total of the season with just 14 points in the opening 20 minutes.
Jamirah Shutes opened the game with a three-pointer from the top of the key while Emani Jefferson added in two free throws to give the Tigers the 5-1 lead, but ECU's offense would get into a groove and take the 13-10 lead into the second quarter.
The Pirates defense would hold Memphis to just four points in the third quarter and the Tigers faced a 28-14 deficit heading into halftime.
It was all ECU in the second half, holding the Memphis offense to just 11 and 13 points in the final two quarter of play.
Makaiya Brooks would add in back-to-back three-pointers in the final three minutes of the game, but the Tigers would end up suffering the 68-38 loss.
Tyler Frierson led the team today with seven points and eight rebounds while Brooks and Alana Davis added in six and five points, respectively.
