OXFORD, Miss. – Though the Memphis Tigers took advantage of three early errors by No. 4 Ole Miss, the Tigers couldn't hold early 2-0 and 3-1 leads in a 16-4 loss to the Rebels. The Tigers had three hits through two innings but just one more the rest of the night.
The Tigers (4-1) struck first for just the second time in five games this season, as they plated two runs in the opening frame and one run in the second against Drew McDaniel (W, 2-0). Jaylen Wilbon opened the game with a walk, while Ian Bibiloni followed with a single, one of his two hits on the night. Two batters later, both Tigers scored on a throwing error from Jacob Gonzalez. After Ole Miss (6-2) got a run back against Carson Stinnett (L, 2-1) in the home half of the first inning, a leadoff hit batter plus another Ole Miss error ran the Memphis lead back to two runs, as the Tigers led 3-1 after 1.5 innings.
Ole Miss continued to put pressure on Stinnett in the second inning, as the first four batters of the inning reached and all eventually scored. Gonzalez made up for his error with a game-tying two-run double, while he scored one batter later on an RBI single from Justin Bench. Stinnett allowed four runs, all earned, and walked six over two innings, as Ole Miss led 4-3 after two frames.
The Rebels busted the game open against the Memphis bullpen in the third inning. Dalton Kendrick got just one out, as the lefty surrendered two hits and walked three. All five of Kendrick's baserunners eventually scored, as Reed Harding got the final two outs of the inning on the mound for the Tigers. The six-run third put Ole Miss ahead 10-3.
While Memphis added a run in the fourth, it was the final run of the night for the Tigers. The Ole Miss bullpen faced the minimum over the final five innings. Jackson Kimbrell pitched three perfect frames while Greer Holston spun the final two perfect innings. The Rebels' offense scored in every inning but seventh and ran away with the 16-4 victory.
The Tigers won't have to wait long to face more Power Five competition, as they head to Waco, Texas this weekend for four games over three days against the Baylor Bears. The teams start the series with a single game at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night. They will follow with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Saturday and conclude the series with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
