The two programs matched up at the home of the Blue Raiders in Murfreesboro last season in what proved to be the final two games of the season for both teams, March 10-11. Middle Tennessee State picked up 6-1 and 2-1 wins in the midweek clashes. The Tigers and Blue Raiders have met at least once every season since 2010 and in all but two seasons since 2000. Since 2000, Middle Tennessee State has won 27 of the 47 games between the two schools, including four of the last six. The Tigers won their last home series vs. the Blue Raiders, with a doubleheader sweep on March 2, 2019 after they dropped the series opener the day before. Dating back to 1978, Memphis trails the all-time series 52-49.
Middle Tennessee State has a balanced offense that has average nearly five runs per game. Five regulars have hit at least .273 so far, paced by Cole Escher, who has hit .350 in nine games. Fausto Lopez and Brycen Thomas are tied for the team lead with 9 RBIs, while three different players, including Thomas, have hit two home runs. Six players who have appeared in at least 10 of 15 games this season for the Blue Raiders have hit .225 or worse, including four everyday starters. Despite this, Middle Tennessee State has a run differential of +23, more than a run better than the opposition per game.
Pitching has been the strength for the Blue Raiders through the first 15 games, as the staff has posted a 2.80 ERA. In four appearances, three starts, Zach Keenan has been nearly perfect. Keenan is 2-0 with a 0.38 ERA and 28 strikeouts with no walks in 23.2 innings. Three relievers for Middle Tennessee State have an ERA under 1.60. Eriq Swan has not allowed a run across four outings, Adam Link has given up just one earned run in 8.2 innings of relief, and Jaden Hamm has given up just one run in three appearances.
