No. 22 Tigers open 2021 Spring season against UAB

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Kicking off its 26th season in program history, No. 22 Memphis women's soccer welcomes the UAB Blazers to Park Avenue Campus Thursday night for a 6 p.m. matchup. Attendance to home matches this spring will be limited to player and staff guests.

When the Tigers kick off against the Blazers on Thursday night, it will mark 447 days since the last time Memphis was in action. The Tigers are coming off a historic season in fall 2019 after claiming the regular-season American Athletic Conference championship and their eighth trip to the NCAA Tournament. Memphis and the American Athletic Conference postponed its fall 2020 competition to spring 2021 to align with the NCAA championship season. The 2019 Tigers posted a 17-3-1 record, including an 8-0-1 mark in conference play.
The spring 2021 edition of Memphis women's soccer was named the favorite in the AAC women's soccer preseason coaches' poll. The Tigers earned seven out of nine first-place votes for a total of 63 points.
A league-record four student-athletes represented Memphis on the AAC Preseason All-Conference Team. Senior forward Clarissa Larisey and sophomore midfielder Mya Jones were unanimous selections, joining junior midfielder Tanya Boychuk and senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg.
In addition, Larisey and Moberg garnered the league's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, respectively. A season after earning All-America honors, Larisey was also named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List in January.
Memphis leads the overall series against the Blazers by a 13-9-1 mark, including wins in the last six matchups. The Tigers have also bested the Blazers in overtime in the last two meetings in 2017 and 2018. Memphis has won its last seven season-opening games, outscoring opponents 21-2.
UAB visits Memphis having split two road regular-season contests in the fall of 2020. The Blazers beat Mercer 2-1 on Oct. 17 before dropping a 0-2 decision at Georgia State on Oct. 28.
The Blazers return three of their top four goal scorers from the 2019 season, as Regan Kommor, Sha'nya Stephens and Asha Zuniga each tallied three goals.
