Tigers start 2021 campaign at JoAnne Graf Classic Friday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The wait is finally over for the University of Memphis softball team as the Tigers travel to Tallahassee, Fla. for the 2021 season opening tournament at the JoAnne Graf Classic hosted by Florida State University. The Tigers will compete in five games, starting against Missouri on Friday at 9 a.m. CT.
Live stats will be available for all tournament games. After competing against Missouri on Friday morning the Tigers will immediately take on FSU. On Saturday Memphis will face FSU at 9 a.m. and Missouri at 2 p.m. The tournament wraps up Sunday with another Memphis and Missouri matchup at 8 a.m.

Memphis Notes
The Tigers return 21 players from a year ago including Sara Ann Davidson whose senior season was cut short due to the coronavirus. Last season she started in all 25 games at third base and hit the first Memphis home run of 2020 in the season opening win against Iowa State.
In the circle, Memphis returns Chyanne Ellett, Mariah Nichols, Kailey Hilderbrand and Zoey Lecompte. Last season Ellett made an immediate impact as a freshman as she appeared in 17 games with 10 starts. She led the Tigers with a 2.65 ERA and a 9-2 overall record. Nichols had three games with at least five strikeouts.
Key offensive and defensive returners include Samantha Ibison, Gracie Morton, Delaney Smith, Baylee Smith and Brady Rowland. Last year as a sophomore, Ibison started in all 25 games at shortstop and finished with a .396 batting average. She led the Tigers with 36 hits and three triples. She also posted four doubles and 10 RBIs.
The Tigers welcome six newcomers. Memphis is under the direction of head coach Natalie Poole, who enters her 10th season at the helm.
