Tigers Close Regular Season at SMU with Tournament Spot Up for Grabs
Nov 04, 2021 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers are playing for a spot in the 2021 American Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship Friday night at SMU, as the regular season comes to a close with the 7 p.m. kickoff.
The match will be broadcast on ESPN+, and live stats are also available.
Currently holding the fourth and final tournament spot with 13 points, Memphis (5-8-2, 4-4-1 AAC) can clinch a postseason berth with a win or draw Friday night. The Tigers would also secure their spot if fifth-place South Florida (10 points) loses or draws against Temple.
With a win over SMU (16 points), Memphis would be the third seed in the tournament by virtue of a pair of wins over the Mustangs this season. Earlier this year, the Tigers hosted 10th-ranked SMU and picked up a 3-2 overtime win.
"As you would expect with the last game of the conference season, a lot is up for grabs with the biggest being a chance for us to make the conference tournament," Memphis head coach Richard Mulrooney said. "We know it's not an easy task to go to SMU and grab points, but the boys are playing with a lot of confidence and know this is the biggest game of the season. We're excited to be in this position and are going to try and make the most of this great opportunity."
The AAC Tournament will be held at top-seeded and conference champion Tulsa next Wednesday and Saturday.
