Tigers Earn Spot in AAC Tournament with Resounding Win at SMU

DALLAS – The Memphis Tigers punched their ticket to the 2021 American Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship with a 4-1 win at SMU Friday night in Dallas.
After being picked to finish last in the conference in the preseason poll, Memphis (6-8-2, 5-4-1 AAC) is the third seed in next week's tournament hosted by league champion Tulsa. The Mustangs (8-4-3, 5-4-1 AAC) are the fourth seed after Memphis defeated them twice this year to take the tiebreaker.

- SMU started off quickly, taking a 1-0 lead on a Skage Simonsen goal in the 2nd minute.
- But the Tigers responded with three goals in the next 18 minutes to take a 3-1 lead into the half.
- Peter Chang ripped home a goal from the 18-yard box in the 5th minute.
- Chang served the ball into the box in the 19th minute, and Maxi Galizzi converted to put Memphis on top, 2-1.
- Galizzi made it a brace, and a 3-1 Tiger lead, three-and-a-half minutes later off a well-executed corner kick.
- Jovan Prado scored Memphis' fourth goal in the 65th minute off a pass from Gabriel Christensen and a touch by Galizzi.
- Memphis' four goals are the most SMU has allowed in a match this season.
- Galizzi has nine goals on the season, third-most in the conference, including two-goal games in both season matches against SMU and three braces overall on the year.
- Chang's goal was his first of the year.
- Memphis senior goalkeeper Parker Lackland, playing in his hometown of Dallas, made six saves including multiple beautiful stops in the second half.
- Head coach Richard Mulrooney earned the 50th win of his Memphis career.
- The Tigers open AAC Tournament play Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. against second-seeded UCF.
- With a win, the Tigers would advance to the championship match next Saturday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. against either top-seeded Tulsa or fourth-seeded SMU.
- Each match in the AAC Tournament will be broadcast on ESPN+.
