MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 6-ranked University of Memphis rifle team will begin the 2021-22 season against the No. 1 West Virginia Mountaineers on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 9 a.m. CT in Morgantown, W.V.
Live targets and results will be available for the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) match on GoTigersGo.com, courtesy of MEGAlink Electronic Scoring Systems.
"This is a very exciting opportunity to kick-off our season against a team like WVU," interim head coach Morgan Phillips said. "The team has been working very hard over the last couple of months and they're ready to apply what they work on every day in a match. I really look forward to seeing what we can do this weekend and how we can continue to grow in the future."
The first match of the season is just a sign of things to come for the Tigers, who will face one of the toughest schedules in the nation. All eight opponents for Memphis this season were ranked in the latest Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Top-20 – No. 1 West Virginia, No. 2 Kentucky, No. 7 Navy, No. 8 Ole Miss, No. 9 Army, No. 11 Murray State, No. 13 N.C. State and No. 14 Akron.
The Tigers will compete in five matches in the fall and four more in the winter before facing Murray State in a NCAA qualifier on Feb. 20, 2022. The GARC Championships will be on Feb. 25-26, 2022, with the NCAA Championships on March 11-12, 2022.
Memphis boasts an experienced, talented squad in 2021-22, with all six members of the team having competed on the NCAA level. Five returners from last season – Kaylene Castillo, Taylor Christian, David Crenshaw, Jack Kersey and Mark Meyeraan – are joined by talented transfer Angeline Henry, who was the 2019 NCAA individual Air Rifle runner-up and helped TCU win the NCAA team title.
