MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis volleyball is set to return to action for the 2021 spring season for its inaugural season in the Larry O. Finch Center. The four-month season consists of 14 scheduled matches, which includes 10 against American Athletic Conference opponents. The Tigers have eight home matches with three broadcast on ESPN+.
"Our team is excited to kick off the season this Friday in our new home for volleyball," said head coach Sean Burdette. "After more than a year off, it's great to be able to get back out on the court to compete. Our student-athletes have made many sacrifices and adapted to changes in the collegiate landscape."
Memphis begins with back-to-back weekend non-conference series, each with matches Friday and Saturday. The Tigers will host Southern Illinois (Jan. 22-34) and Louisiana Tech (Jan. 29-30).
Seating for home matches in the Larry O. Finch Center will be limited to player and staff guests.
"There are a lot of experienced players returning throughout the conference," said Burdette. "Teams will have to adjust from one night to the next, because for the first time, we'll see the same opponent on back-to-back days for all of our series."
Friday's season opener vs. Southern Illinois is at 7 p.m. on ESPN+, while Saturday's match between the two is at 5 p.m.
The Friday matchup on Jan. 29 vs. Louisiana Tech is set for 7 p.m., while the start time for the Saturday match will be announced at a later date. Both matches vs. Louisiana Tech will be available on ESPN+.
"Although this is a shorter season than normal, we face tough competition every weekend, starting with our two non-conference opponents," said Burdette. "The West Division of the AAC will be tough from top to bottom again this year, just as it was a until the end of the season last year."
The Tigers hit the road for the first time and open conference play in New Orleans, La., with a Friday/Saturday matchup against Tulane Feb. 5-6.
Memphis opens home conference play with Thursday/Friday matchups against Tulsa Feb. 18-19, at 7 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.
The next four matches for the Tigers are on the road-with a Thursday/Friday series at Wichita State March 4-5, followed by a Friday/Saturday series at Houston March 12-13.
The Tigers close out the regular season at home with a pair of matches vs. SMU March 6-27 at 5 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
The American Athletic Conference Championship will be held April 2-3 in Cincinnati, Ohio, between the top two teams from each division.
