WILMINGTON, N.C. – Another standout day on the mound coupled with strong offense led to a 6-1 Memphis win against UNCW Saturday afternoon at Brooks Field.
With the victory, the Tigers claimed their third straight series and improved to 10-4 on the season.
After senior Danny Denz posted a career day in the series opener, junior Carson Stinnett continued the momentum for the staff to earn his first win of the year. The Oxford, Miss., native tossed a career-high 7.1 innings, allowing one unearned run while striking out three Seahawks batters.
Braden Webb led the Tigers offensively with a pair of hits and three RBI. Defensively, Webb also ended the fifth inning with a grab at the wall to keep momentum away from the home side. He also turned a would-be single into a force out at third base with UNCW threatening in the ninth inning.
Memphis posted three runs in the second inning to gain the early edge. With one on and two out, freshman Austin Baskin and junior Chris Swanberg tallied RBI doubles, and an RBI single from Webb turned the advantage to 3-0.
Countering, Stinnett worked efficiently to begin his fourth career start in Blue and Gray. The junior retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced before allowing the Seahawks' first hit in the fourth inning.
A defensive miscue led to UNCW's first run of the series in the sixth inning, but Stinnett silenced the momentum by retiring the side in just four pitches in the seventh.
After UNCW plated its run in the sixth, Webb helped the Tigers answer in the top of the seventh. With runners on the corners and two out, the freshman sent a double down the right field line to clear the bases. Freshman Taylor Howell then sealed the scoring with his second home run of the season in the ninth.
Memphis seeks to complete the sweep on Sunday with first pitch set for 11 a.m. (CT).
