Baseball faces UNCW in first road series of season

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Memphis baseball embarks on its first road series of the 2020 campaign with a visit to Wilmington, N.C. to face the UNCW Seahawks. First pitch from Brooks Field on Friday is set for 3 p.m. (CT).

The Tigers shift focus to the weekend following an 8-1 setback at No. 9 Ole Miss on Tuesday. Prior, the Tigers posted a seven-game win streak, including back-to-back series sweeps against Dayton and Western Illinois.
Sophomore Hunter Goodman continued his strong start to the season with an RBI single against the Rebels on Tuesday night. His seven home runs and 30 RBI currently rank second nationally. Last weekend against Western Illinois, the Arlington, Tenn., native posted 22 RBI and four homers, yielding National Player of the Week honors.
Offensively, Memphis ranks 17th nationally with 15 home runs and 22nd in the country with 99 runs scored. The Tigers' pitching staff has also enjoyed early-season success, collecting 12.3 strikeouts per nine innings, which rank seventh in the country.
UNCW has won three in a row and six of its last seven. Last weekend, the Seahawks swept Kentucky in Lexington, including a pair of shutout wins to open the series.
Individually, Trevor Marsh (.321), Noah Bridges (.319) and Cole Weiss (.311) all carry averages of over .300 into the weekend. On the mound, Zarion Sharpe (0.96) and Landen Roupp (0.47) have surrendered less than one earned run per game.
This weekend's meeting will mark the second time the two programs will face off on the diamond, with the first being a year ago in Memphis. The Tigers bested the Seahawks in 2019, taking two of three games. After falling in the series-opener, the Tigers responded with wins of 10-8 and 7-4 to claim the series.
