This weekend's series marks the first time Memphis and Xavier will meet on the diamond since the Tigers swept a doubleheader in the lone series meeting in 1980. Memphis is coming off a 27-28 campaign in 2019 after returning to the American Athletic Conference Championships in May. Xavier posted a 27-31 mark a season ago and made it to the Big East Tournament championship round before being eliminated.
Memphis welcomes 17 newcomers to the roster, including seven position players, nine pitchers and one two-way student-athlete. The Tigers return three of their top six hitters from a year ago. Senior Alec Trela and Ben Brooks return to the lineup after seeing improvement in 2019, while sophomore Hunter Goodman seeks to build upon an impressive rookie campaign in the Blue and Gray.
Trela and Goodman were named to the AAC Preseason Team, while Goodman was also listed to a pair of Preseason All-America lists.
On the mound, the Tigers return nine arms, including 24 starts. After breaking the school record for strikeouts in a season in 2018, the 2019 Tigers topped the mark with 501 strikeouts. Senior left-handed pitcher Danny Denz, the Tigers' projected starter on Friday, seeks to break into the Memphis rotation after starting six games in 12 appearances as a junior.
Xavier finished its 2019 season as runners up in the Big East tournament. The Musketeers were picked in a three-way tie for second in the 2020 Big East preseason poll. Senior catcher Natale Monastra, junior infielder Ryan Altenberger, sophomore infielder Jack Housinger and sophomore right-handed pitcher Lane Flamm were named All-Big East preseason selections.
