Fankam Mendjiadeu posts double-double in road victory at Wichita State

Memphis defeated Wichita State in lone matchup of the regular season
WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team used a strong second half to propel itself to a 69-60 conference road victory at Wichita State Wednesday evening. The Tigers improve to 13-11 on the year and 4-7 in American Athletic Conference play with the victory against the Shockers.
Junior forward Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu posted her 10th double-double of the season with a team-high 19 points and 12 rebounds. Memphis had four players in double figures against Wichita State.
Wichita State hit the first basked of the contest, but Memphis responded with a 5-0 run including the first three-pointer of the game by Aerial Wilson. Defense was on point in the first stanza as Memphis posted three blocks before the first media timeout.
Memphis' suffocating defense in the first quarter led to a nine-minute stretch of action where the Tigers held Wichita State scoreless from the floor. During that span, the Tigers built their lead to as many as nine on Madison Griggs' first three-pointer of the contest with 9:05 remaining in the first half.
The Shockers bounced back from their 3-for-16 effort in the first 10 minutes to shoot 50 percent in the final six minutes of the half. Wichita State's run tied up the contest at the intermission, 32-32.
Memphis posted five first half blocks and was led by Fankam Mendjiadeu's eight points and five rebounds.
Wichita State knocked down a pair of three-pointers out of the gate in the second half, but Memphis responded with baskets by Wilson and Keke Hunter. The third quarter proved to play out in a back-and-forth fashion as there were eight lead changes in that span.
Griggs' second triple of the contest combined with a buzzer-beating look inside to Alana Davis propelled Memphis to a 10-4 run to close out the third quarter.
Once Memphis regained the lead for the final time with 4:53 remaining in the third, the Tigers never looked back. Memphis ultimately outscored Wichita State by five in the third and four in the fourth quarter to come away with the road victory.
The Tigers shot 43 percent from the floor while holding the Shockers to a 34 percent clip. Rebounding was tied at 41 while turnovers were tied at 15 a piece. Memphis finished with 38 points in the paint and 21 second chance points.
