Tigers earn award for the sixth time in last seven years.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Memphis volleyball program has earned a 2019 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, the organization announced Monday. It is the sixth time in the last seven years the Tigers received recognition for their work in the classroom.
To receive the honor, teams must maintain a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative GPA on a 5.0 scale.
"I am very proud of the hard work and dedication that our student-athletes, coaches and academic support staff have put in to achieve this recognition this past academic year," said head coach Sean Burdette. "We have phenomenal resources available here at the University of Memphis for our student-athletes to be successful, and they take full advantage of those services.
Â
"It starts in CAAS (Center for Athletic Academic Services) with the guidance of our academic counselor Bridget VanLandeghem. Bridget coordinates the completion of study table hours and the scheduling of tutoring and mentoring sessions. (Assistant coach) Alexa (Wharton) does a great job as our liaison with CAAS and works closely with Bridget, receiving weekly updates and grade reports.
Â
"As a program, we have set a slightly higher internal academic goal of a 3.50 or higher team GPA, and with the coordinated efforts through CAAS, we have been able reach that goal. We look forward to maintaining this level of academic excellence in the upcoming year."
This is the 16th time the Tigers received the AVCA distinction since the award's inception in 1993. Memphis earned its first AVCA Team Academic Award in 1999. The Tigers have been honored 14 of the last 16 years (2004-11; 2013-16; 2018-19).
Memphis is one of seven American Athletic Conference schools to earn a 2019 AVCA Team Academic Award, joining Cincinnati, SMU, Temple, Tulsa, UCF and Wichita State. The Tigers also are one of five NCAA Division I programs from the state of Tennessee named to the list (Chattanooga, Lipscomb, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Tennessee Tech).
Burdette's previous head coach stop at Green Bay saw the Phoenix receive an AVCA Team Academic Award in each of his four years (2014-17). In his head coaching tenure at Bradley from 2008-10, the Braves earned an AVCA Team Academic Award two years.
To receive the honor, teams must maintain a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative GPA on a 5.0 scale.
