MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis rising sophomore Tanalya Gordon is scheduled to compete in the 2019 USA Track and Field Junior Championships Sunday afternoon. The Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar, Fla., is the host for the USA Junior Championships.
Gordon is in the women's long jump, which is slated for a 12:15 p.m. (CT) start. With a top-two finish, Gordon would advance to the Pan American Championships in Costa Rica in late July.
Â
"This is an awesome opportunity for Tanalya. She's earned it," said Memphis head coach Kevin Robinson. "She's one of the best young jumpers in the NCAA this year.
Â
"This is a really big meet and gives you a taste of what it's like at the U.S. level, which is a little different from the NCAA. This is a great achievement for her to qualify for this meet, and she's in a position where she can be highly competitive this weekend. (Assistant) Coach Matt (Koelling) has done a great job with her, and I'm looking forward to see how she performs."
Â
Gordon, a Murfreesboro, Tenn., native, is coming off an impressive freshman campaign in 2019. Earlier this month, she advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas, where she earned All-America second team honors in the women's long jump. She placed 16thin the event.
Â
Prior to her NCAA Championships appearance, Gordon won silver in the women's long jump at the American Athletic Conference Championships in May. She placed second with a school-record jump of 20-7.25 (6.28m), breaking the previous program mark that she tied at the Memphis Tiger Invitational in late April.
Â
She had four top-three performances in the long jump during the outdoor season.
Â
Gordon also took home bronze in the women's long jump from the conference's indoor championships in late February. She posted five top-three finishes in the long jump in the indoor campaign.
