Softball Falls to USF in AAC Championship Quarterfinal
May 09, 2019 | Softball
HOUSTON, Texas – The Memphis softball team ended its season with an 8-0 loss in the quarterfinal round of the American Athletic Conference Championship to No. 1-seeded USF.
The Tigers finish 2019 with a 22-33 overall record and a 3-17 conference record.
Memphis entered the tournament as the No.8 seed with three Tigers earning all-conference honors on Wednesday. Ashley Threatt was named to the first team, while Alyssa Dean and Baylee Smith were named to the second team. Dean was also an All-Rookie selection.
Memphis was competitive for the first two innings, allowing zero hits in the opening pair of frames. Karli Perque was able to induce groundouts from four of the first six batters, with one batter striking out as well.
USF would open the scoring in the third frame, capitalizing on walks and timely hits.
The Tigers threatened in the fourth inning, as Gracie Morton was hit by a pitch before Smith reached on a fielder's choice. Threatt advanced the runners to second and third, respectively, but the pair would be stranded in scoring position.
Though Memphis would retire the Bulls in order in the fourth inning, the Bulls would add runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take the win.
Dean attempted to spark some life in the Tiger lineup in the sixth inning with a one-out single, but she would be left on base without being able to advance.
Perque was dealt the loss after pitching 2.1 innings of work. Bayleigh Wisher and Mariah Nichols came in relief and combined for a pair of strikeouts.
