Tigers fall at No. 6 ECU
May 17, 2019 | Baseball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Memphis baseball dropped a 5-3 contest at No. 6 ECU Friday night at Clark-LeClair Stadium in the second game of the weekend slate.
Errors throughout the evening plagued the Tigers as four miscues in the field led to a pair of unearned runs.
Offensively, Kyle Ouellette tallied a multiple night, while Colton Neel and Payton Marshall tallied an RBI each. Freshman Hunter Goodman also added his 12th home run of the year.
Senior Alex Hicks was tagged with the loss, surrendering four runs (two earned) in 3.2 innings of work. Out of the bullpen, senior Alex Smith tossed 3.1 scoreless innings. The lefty surrendered only one hit and faced three over the minimum.
Despite the setback, the Tigers clinched at least the No. 7 seed in next week's American Athletic Conference Championships in Clearwater, Fla.
ECU plated two in the bottom of the first inning before the Tigers chipped away with one in the top of the second. Ouellette led off the frame with a double, and after a wild pitched moved him to third, Marshall drove in the Tigers' first run with a sacrifice bunt.
Memphis tied the game behind Goodman's leadoff homer in the fourth, but ECU answered with two in the home half to reclaim the lead.
The Tigers drew closer in the top of the eighth after an RBI double by Neel trimmed the deficit to one run. That would be as close as the Tigers could reach as ECU closed the door in the ninth to set the final.
Memphis will close the series and regular season Saturday against the Pirates at 12 p.m.
