Memphis travels to Arkansas State for border matchup

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After a weekend series win against Houston at home, Memphis baseball will open the month of April with a road visit to Arkansas State on Wednesday. The midweek matchup from Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field is set for 6:30 p.m.

Memphis returns to the road after a four-game home stand that saw a narrow setback against Ole Miss and a league series victory against Houston. The Tigers began the week with a season-high 15 hits against the Rebels in a 9-6 setback. Memphis continued the offensive momentum against the Cougars with a doubleheader sweep on Friday.
Freshman Hunter Goodman was named The American's Player of the Week. The rookie hit .563 in four games last week, driving in seven runs and connecting on his first two collegiate home runs. The Arlington, Tenn., native also ranks among the top 10 in the league in hits, RBI, doubles, total bases and stolen bases.
On the mound, the Tigers continue to post efficient numbers in the punchout department. Memphis has registered 270 strikeouts this season, while the staff's 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings ranks sixth nationally.
Arkansas State hosts Southern Illinois on Tuesday before welcoming the Tigers to Jonesboro on Wednesday. The Red Wolves have won eight of their last 10 matchups, including a pair of league series against South Alabama and at Coastal Carolina.
Four Arkansas State players are hitting over .300 this season. The Red Wolves also feature four hitters with 20-plus RBI this year, led by Sky-Lar Culver with 28 runs batted in.
Memphis swept the season series against the Red Wolves last year, turning in back-to-back, home-and-away wins on Apr. 10-11. The Tigers lead the all-time series by a 62-33 margin since 1978.
