Softball Drops Doubleheader To Wichita State Friday

Alyssa Dean led Memphis with four hits
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis softball team suffered a pair of setbacks Friday to conference foe Wichita State. The Tigers dropped the first game of the day in extra innings by a score of 10-3 before falling in game two by an 8-4 margin.

Memphis falls to 21-22 on the year and 3-8 in American Athletic Conference play.

Wichita State scored three runs right off the bat on four hits in the top of the first inning. Memphis answered throughout the contest with one run in each of the third, sixth and seventh inning.

The game-tying run scored off the bat of Gracie Morton, who singled up the middle. Samantha Ibison was the base runner after reaching on a lead-off single. The Tigers had the opportunity to take the lead after Baylee Smith recorded a bunt single to the pitcher, but Gracie Morton was thrown out at home.

Wichita State capitalized in the top of the eighth with seven runs to pull away from the Tigers. Mariah Nichols was handed the loss in game one. Alyssa Dean led Memphis offensively with three hits. In all, the Tigers tallied 11 hits in game one.

Game two started much like game one, with the Shockers putting runs up in the top of the first inning.

A pair of doubles in the bottom of the first by Gracie Morton and Ryleigh Aungst led to a run scoring and cutting the Shocker lead in half, 2-1.

Wichita State added three in the second and two in the fourth before the Tigers answered in the bottom half of the fourth. With one out, Dean tallied her fourth hit of the day to spark the Memphis offense. An RBI ground out by Samantha Ibison and a double by Delaney Smith brought in two runs for the Tigers to cut the Shocker lead down to four.

Baylee Smith clawed away at the Shockers lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The home run to dead center was her fifth of the season.

Smith's fifth inning home run proved to be the final time the Tigers would score in the contest. Karli Perque earned the start for the Tigers and fell to 6-8 on the year with the setback.
