Softball Suffers Setback in Midweek Against Mississippi State
Apr 10, 2019 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Tigers softball team fell in its midweek game against Mississippi State. Memphis had a tough time keeping up with the offense of the Bulldogs, dropping the matchup with its SEC opponent by a 15-3 margin.
Memphis slides to 21-20 on the season with the loss. The Tigers return to action this weekend against American Athletic Conference opponent Wichita State.
The top of the first inning was highlighted with patient at bats for the Tigers, as three batters walked. The third walk of the inning came from Ryleigh Aungst, who did so with the bases loaded, giving Memphis a 1-0 lead after the top half of the inning.
The Bulldogs offense responded with a big home half of the first inning.
After Gracie Morton led off the fourth inning with a walk, Aungst lined up a pitch and drove it beyond the center field wall, smacking her sixth home run of the season.
Memphis would load the bases in the fifth inning on three straight walks but the Tigers were unable to drive any of the runners in. In all, Memphis drew seven walks, which ties a season-high.
Karli Perque earned the start against the Bulldogs and was handed the loss. Kailey Hilderbrand would finish the game in the circle for the Tigers, coming in to pitch 1.1 innings of softball.
