Women’s Golf Closing Regular Season With Home Event
Mar 31, 2019 | Women's Golf
Final home event for trio of seniors.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's golf team will close out its regular season with its own home event, The Memphis Intercollegiate, Monday and Tuesday at Ridgeway Country Club.
The event, which was last contended in Memphis as a fall event, will be played in the spring for the first time at Ridgeway Country Club. From the 2010-11 season until the 2016-17 season, the event was held each fall at the Lady Tigers' home course. Memphis won the last two events, in the fall of 2015 and 2016, before putting the event on hiatus for a year while competing in other fall events. When announcing the return of the tournament this year, head coach Beth Harrelson cited the higher quality field she could bring to Memphis for this year's event in the spring compared to a fall date.
The field this year features 14 teams, including Penn State, Middle Tennessee, Memphis, Marshall, Toledo, Western Kentucky, Central Arkansas, Troy, Southern Miss, Cincinnati, UAB, Missouri State, Arkansas State and Little Rock.
The field will play two rounds on Monday, beginning with an 8:30 am shotgun start. The event will wrap up Tuesday with 18 holes, also off an 8:30 am shotgun start.
The event will be the final home event for Memphis seniors Sydney Colwill, Michaela Fletcher and Madison Thomas. Colwill and Thomas both played their first-ever collegiate event on the same course in the fall event in 2015. Colwill posted a top-four finish, competing as an individual in her first collegiate tournament, while Thomas ended up tied with then-senior Ashleigh Whisenant at the end of 36 holes, claiming individual medalist honors in a sudden-death playoff. Fletcher missed the season-opening event in the fall of 2014, as she was in transit back to the United States after representing her native South Africa in the World Amateur Team Championships in Japan. Fletcher then missed the 2015 event with an injury that would eventually cost her the entire season and made her first-ever appearance in the tournament in 2016, finishing third and helping Memphis to back-to-back titles before the event's one-year hiatus.
Live scoring from the event will be available on GolfStat.com at: http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=participants&tid=16803. Memphis will be paired on day one with golfers from Penn State and Middle Tennessee. Fletcher, Colwill, and Thomas will be joined by freshmen Ana Dawson and Victoria Gallegos in the team entry while Julia Matzat and Abby Herrmann compete as individuals. The team golfers will go off holes one through four while Matzat goes off 17 and Herrmann starts on 18.
