Reayer's tiebreak victory clinches match for Memphis
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – A late rally helped propel Memphis women's tennis to a 4-3 victory against William & Mary Sunday afternoon at McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
Despite dropping the doubles point, the Tigers turned in four wins in singles play. Sophomore Alisha Reayer secured the match for Memphis after claiming a second-set tiebreak at the top spot.
"I'm really proud of the efforts of this team," Head Coach Hayden Perez said. "We did not play our best doubles and I let the team know it. The way they responded and focused on doing with a they needed to do in singles was impressive."
The Tigers (6-6) were first off the court in doubles play when junior Katherine Cao and freshman Hannah Davies claimed a 6-2 win at the No. 2 position. William & Mary (4-9) erased the Memphis advantage with a win on court 3, and then sealed the opening point with a victory at the top spot.
In singles, the Tigers began to turn momentum by taking four of the six opening frames. Sophomore Lina Hohnhold made quick work on court 6 in straight sets to even the match score at 1-1.
The Tribe posted their first singles win on court 3 to take a brief 2-1 match lead, but sophomore Laura Bente turned in a straight-set decision on court 2 to even the contest. Cao then delivered a 6-2, 6-3 win to give the Tigers their first lead of the day at 3-2.
After the home side tied the match once more on court 4, all eyes turned to the top spot for the match-deciding point.
Reayer, who claimed a 7-5 win in the first set, held serve late to force a second-set tiebreak. The sophomore built momentum early with a 3-2 lead, and three straight points turned it into a 6-2 advantage. Reayer then sent a backhand winner down the line to claim the match for the Tigers.
"I'm really happy for the way Alisha competed at the end of her match and knowing the team score was coming down to her court," Perez added. "She kept her composure when she needed to. I am just really happy for the whole team today."
Memphis will remain on the road for a pair of matches in Birmingham, Ala., next weekend. The Tigers will face UAB on Friday at 2 p.m. before closing the trip with a meeting against Samford on Saturday at noon.
