Simpson Resets Own School Record In Hammer Friday

Tigers win six events, post 12 top-three finishes.
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Make it two in a row for University of Memphis track and field freshman Amber Simpson.

In the second collegiate meet of her career, Simpson reset her school record in the women's hammer with a throw of 197-11 (60.33m) to highlight Friday's action for the Tigers at the 2019 Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays. Simpson made her collegiate debut at last weekend's Rhodes Invitational and set her first school record in the event with a mark of 196-1 (59.76m).

Simpson's throw Friday vaults her into the top-15 in the event nationally. Her throw currently leads The American.

On the men's side, the distance group paced the Tigers' effort. Memphis took top honors in the 1500 meters (Matthew Viveiros), 5000 meters (Matthew Kamph) and 3000-meter steeplechase (Julian Sanchez-Pinto).

Tigers Tidbits
- In Friday action, the Tigers won six events and had 12 top-three performances.
- Memphis swept all three podium positions in the women's hammer. Amber Simpson won the event with her school-record throw, followed by Vigdis Jonsdottir in second and Samantha Lenton in third.
- For a second-straight meet, Samantha Lenton threw a personal-best in the women's hammer. Her effort of 186-9 (56.93m) surpassed her previous-best of 184-11 (56.36m) set last weekend.
- Saida Burns-Moore and Samantha Lenton were the lone Tigers that posted two top-three performances Friday. Burns-Moore placed second in the women's high and triple jumps, and Lenton was third in the women's discus and hammer.
- Ten Tigers posted personal-bests and they were: Saida Burns-Moore (women's triple jump), Rosie Cicmanec (women's high jump), Christian Hill (women's triple jump), Hunter Miniard (men's 110m hurdles), Josh Owten (men's 110m hurdles), Paris Perkins (women's 400m), Hannah Pettigrew (women's 1500m), Paige Sandwell (women's 1500m), Aisha Southern (women's 100m hurdles) and Ladasia Walton (women's high jump).
- Six Tigers made first appearances in the following events: Christian Corsello (men's 1500m) Dionna Dennis (women's 400m), Erin Gilbert (women's 1500m), Brendan Hill (men's 1500m), Madi Ray (women's 1500m), and Solstice Saliba (women's 1500m).
- Freshman Payton Gleason made his collegiate debut.
