12 hits, 12 strikeouts propel Memphis to victory
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis baseball claimed a midweek matchup against SWAC foe Mississippi Valley State by way of an 8-1 margin on Tuesday night at FedExPark.
Senior Alex Hicks pitched seven innings of virtually clean baseball, giving up only a pair of hits and an unearned one run before the Tiger bullpen closed the game with an inning of work from Grayson Kemp and Drew Hall.
Offensively, the Tigers notched their eighth win of the season behind balanced offense at the plate as well, producing 12 hits from seven batters.
"We're starting to spread the offense out. We shuffled some things around, and it's worked for the stretch we're in," Head Coach Daron Schoenrock said. "We had the arms in the bullpen to hold them down. As a coach, I wanted to use the last five innings to see if we could score every inning, and they did it. We're trying to slice the game into small moments, and the more quality at-bats you can put together helps that."
At the dish, Keith Stepter continued his torrid play behind a 2-for-4 outing, adding three RBI and two runs scored. Ben Brooks, Nick Vaage, Colton Neel and Cale Hennemann also tallied multiple-hit efforts with each posting two hits.
"We knew that hitting would be a process," Stepter said of the team's offensive groove. "You have to find your lineup with all the hitters. We have 16 great hitters, and we've found something that has clicked."
Despite the visitors taking a lead in the fourth, Memphis responded with three runs in the home half of the inning. Stepter began the scoring with a two-RBI single, and then scored on a Mississippi Valley State miscue to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.
After a run in the fifth, Memphis opened a 6-1 lead in the sixth behind a pair of RBI singles by Hennemann and Brooks.
The Tigers added a run in the seventh via Stepter's third RBI of the night, and Vaage blasted a solo shot to right field in the eighth.
The Tigers will remain at home for a weekend series against UNC Wilmington, beginning with a 6 p.m. first pitch on Friday at FedExPark.
