Big inning leads to Tigers setback at Arkansas
Feb 27, 2019 | Baseball
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – In its first road game of the season, a big inning was too much to overcome as the Memphis baseball team dropped a 10-3 outing at No. 12 Arkansas Wednesday night at Baum-Walker Stadium.
Arkansas plated seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to grab its second lead of the day and didn't look back. Starting his first game of the season, junior LHP Danny Denz was tagged for the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits while striking out two in 4.2 innings pitched.
At the dish, senior Jason Santana went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two extra base hits, including his first home run of the season. Freshman Nick Jones also added a pinch-hit home run in the ninth inning, the first dinger of his collegiate career.
"I thought we had good at-bats early. We kept enough pressure on them," Head Coach Daron Schoenrock said. "Jason got a big swing off. Danny pitched well. He had to work real hard. He was able to keep making pitches to keep us in it. In the fifth, we just couldn't make a pitch with two outs."
Arkansas struck first with a run in the bottom of the opening frame. With two aboard, Dominic Fletcher drove an RBI single to left. Despite a bases-loaded jam later in the inning, Denz limited the damage to just one run.
Memphis responded quickly after senior Nick Vaage singled in the second inning and Santana connected on a 2-run homer to left for a 2-1 lead.
On the hill, Denz settled in, retiring 13 of 17 hitters. With two outs in the fifth, the Razorbacks began their rally as seven consecutive batters reached base. Five hits coupled with three walks throughout the inning yielded an 8-2 Arkansas advantage.
The Tigers found another opportunity with two on in the seventh inning, but a pair of fly outs ended the threat.
Arkansas added two more in the bottom of the seventh before Jones' pinch-hit home run set the 10-3 final.
The Tigers return to FedExPark this weekend for a three-game set against in-state foe Middle Tennessee. First pitch on Friday is slated for 4 p.m.
