Tigers Fall To FGCU, Conclude Weekend With 3-1 Record

Baylee Smith went 2-for-3 and stole two bases Sunday
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of Memphis softball team suffered a 5-0 setback Sunday afternoon to Florida Gulf Coast University to conclude the second weekend of play. The loss drops the Tigers to 5-4 overall and 3-1 at the FGCU Invitational.

Baylee Smith continued to lead the Tigers offensively with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. She finished the weekend going 8-for-10 with six RBIs, five extra base hits and two runs scored.

FGCU got on the board early in the bottom of the second and continued to add to its total throughout the entirety of the contest. The Tigers had several opportunities, but struggled to advance runners. The only Memphis base runner to reach third base was Jessie Lamb during the top of the seventh inning.

Memphis scattered seven hits from six different hitters on Sunday. Smith was also aggressive on the base paths, swiping two bases against the Eagles.

Mariah Nichols was dealt the loss against FGCU after 4.2 innings of work in the circle. She allowed five hits and struck out three. Bayleigh Wisher came in relief for Memphis and put in 1.1 innings and allowed just two hits.

The Tigers are back in action next weekend at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The LSU-hosted tournament is packed with talent, with Memphis slated to take on CSUN, Stanford, LSU and Michigan.
