MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After being named to Scholar All-Region teams earlier this week, Memphis women's soccer trio of Stasia Mallin, Clarissa Larisey and Elizabeth Moberg each earned United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America status, the organization announced Wednesday.
Mallin and Larisey were voted to the first team while Moberg earned third team honors. Wednesday's announcement marks the first time Memphis has had three named to the same academic All-America list in program history. The recognition also marks the first time since 2010 a Tiger team has had two student-athletes named to the first team in the same season (Lizzy Simonin and Vendula Strnadova).
"I can't be more proud of these three for these well-deserved honors. They sum up what it really means to be a student-athlete," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "This group also had All-Conference and All-American recognition, so not only do they get it done on the field but they are really getting it done in the classroom too.
"That's something that has become part of our culture. Here, you're not only expected to work your tail off on the field but excepted to work your tail off in the classroom as well. Having nine named to academic All-America teams in the last two years speaks for itself and really reflects those expectations."
Mallin, a now three-time academic All-American, was also recognized for her talent on the pitch and garnered United Soccer Coaches First Team All-America honors earlier this month. After garnering CoSIDA Academic All-America honors on Dec. 5, the senior captain became one of six student-athletes nationally to earn All-America status both athletically and academically. She is also the only student-athlete in the country to be named to the first team on all three lists: CoSIDA Academic All-America, United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America and the United Soccer Coaches All-America team.
The biomedical engineering major is a three-time AAC All-Academic Team member and has been named to the Tiger 3.0 Club and Dean's List each semester of her career. On the pitch, the First Team All-Conference honoree posted career highs in goals (3) and assists (14) throughout 2019, while her 29 career assists stand as the all-time record in The American for career assists.
Larisey, who was named a Second Team All-America honoree for a standout season on the field, added her first Scholar All-America recognition on Wednesday. A fellow Tiger 3.0 Club and Dean's List member, Larisey is a two-time AAC All-Academic Team honoree.
The junior capped the regular season as The American's co-Offensive Player of the Year. Larisey led the Tiger offense with 16 goals and ranked fourth on the team with four assists. She also recorded two hat tricks throughout the 2019 campaign, and her 31 career goals pushed her to sixth in the program record book.
After graduating earlier this week, Moberg also claimed her first Scholar All-America honor of her career on Wednesday. A two-time AAC All-Academic team member, Moberg capped the fall semester earning her degree in integrative studies and will begin her graduate program in the spring.
On the field, the junior earned back-to-back United Soccer Coaches All-Region nods after being named the AAC's Goalkeeper of the Year. The Port Saint Lucie, Fla., native posted a 16-2-1 record in net and logged a 0.53 goals-against average, which ranks second in single-season history. Her 27 career clean sheets set a conference shutout record, while her 37 career wins moved her to fourth all-time in program history.
In addition to their personal academic achievements, Mallin, Larisey and Moberg helped the women's soccer team extend its streak of earning the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for 13 consecutive seasons, as announced by the organization in October.
The Tigers have had 12 student-athletes earn academic All-America distinction a total of 18 times in program history, as voted by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) or United Soccer Coaches (formerly NSCAA). Memphis has had seven total student-athletes voted to academic All-America teams in the last two years and nine since 2016. Additionally, Memphis women's soccer teams have collectively earned at least a 3.5 team GPA in each semester since Spring 2014.
