Memphis ends three-game win streak with setback to Cincinnati
Jan 26, 2019 | Women's Basketball
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The University of Memphis women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Saturday with an 80-56 setback to Cincinnati. The Tigers return home for the next three games, looking to bounce back after dropping to 8-11 overall and 3-3 in American Athletic Conference play.
The game started with alternating runs, as Cincinnati opened the contest on a 7-2 burst. Memphis responded with its own 10-0 run capped by Jada Stinson's first three-pointer of the first half.
Stinson's three lifted Memphis to a 14-9 advantage with 1:49 remaining in the first quarter. During the run, Kiana Coomber hit a triple of her own and led Memphis with three rebounds.
Much like Memphis did to them, the Bearcats had an answer to the Tiger run. In the span of five minutes, the Tigers saw their five-point lead diminish and turn into an eight-point, 26-14 Cincinnati lead. Alana Davis snapped the Bearcat run with a pair of made free throws.
Taylor Barnes and Stinson knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the second quarter, including Stinson's second trey with 23 seconds remaining before intermission. Her bucket proved to be the final score of the half and the Tigers went into the locker room trailing Cincinnati, 37-24.
Out of the break, Memphis turned four trips into three baskets and with 7:01 on the clock the Tigers had cut the Cincinnati lead down to eight. Much like the first half, Cincinnati had a response and saw its lead build back up to 14 going into the under five media timeout in the third quarter.
As Memphis would attempt to claw back into the contest, the Bearcats would have an answer. Throughout the remainder of the game, Cincinnati kept the Tigers an arm's length away.
Memphis outrebounded Cincinnati, 41-34, and finished the day with a 10-for-12 effort at the charity stripe.
